Sonnet 59 　If there be nothing new, but that which is　十二言

If there be nothing new, but that which is

且說天下無新鮮事，但它確是
Hath been before, how are our brains beguiled,

曾經發生過，我們大腦被哄騙，
Which labouring for invention bear amiss,

去苦心孕造所謂的仿古新作，
The second burthen of a former child.

複製了帶著缺陷的既存事物。
Oh that record could with a backward look,

哦，縱使太陽已運行了五百年，
Even of five hundred courses of the sun,

但隨時能用歷史回溯的眼光，
Show me your image in some antique book,

在古書里可以看見你的形像，
Since mind at first in character was done,

因為心靈思想早就被文字化，
That I might see what the old world could say

使我們可曉得古人如何描述
To this composed wonder of your frame;

這個以你為框架而寫的事蹟；
Whether we are mended, or where better they, 是

我們須改善，或古人較高明，
Or whether revolution be the same.

或者所謂演變其實是個循環。
　Oh sure I am the wits of former days,

哦，我肯定是個前代的發明者，
　To subjects worse have given admiring praise.

曾造过受人讚揚的低劣之物(詩)。

  如果天下无新事，现在的种种
从前都有过，我们的头脑多上当，
当它苦心要创造，却怀孕成功
一个前代有过的婴孩的重担！
哦，但愿历史能用回溯的眼光
（纵使太阳已经运行了五百周），
在古书里对我显示你的肖像，
自从心灵第一次写成了句读！--

让我晓得古人曾经怎样说法，
关于你那雍容的体态的神奇；
是我们高明，还是他们优越，
或者所谓演变其实并无二致。
