Sonnet 49 　Against that time (if ever that time come)　十二言

Against that time (if ever that time come)

該來的己來到，當我看到你對 （待）
When I shall see thee frown on my defects;

我的缺陷皺眉；在那時你的愛
Whenas thy love hath cast his utmost sum,

已投入那最大一筆總數，成熟
Called to that audit by advised respects;

的思考告訴我，你的愛己結束；
Against that time when thou shalt strangely pass,

這時候，你像路人般，經過我身，
And scarcely greet me with that sun, thine eye;

沒有用熱情的眼神跟我（打）招呼；
When love, converted from the thing it was,

當愛情回復到原狀，不再有情，
Shall reasons find of settled gravity;

我保持理性，尋找被棄的緣故；
Against that time do I ensconce me here

就在這時候，我在此安慰（定）自己，
Within the knowledge of mine own desert,

認知到我自己的貧困無力，
And this my hand against myself uprear

我親手寫下誓辭，對自己不利，
To guard the lawful reasons on thy part:

而維護種種合法理由偏向你：
　To leave poor me, thou hast the strength of laws,

你有正當權利，離開潦倒的我，
　Since why to love I can allege no cause.

到底為什麼愛你，我無源可溯。
　第三句 Whenas thy love hath cast his utmost sum,

當你愛所投入的最大筆總數。
第四句Called to that audit by advised respects;

按著審計上建議的眼光結算。

第九句 ensconce me , 防衛著自己 或安慰（定）自己。第八句 Settled gravity; 被下墜的
引力。
第十句，認知到我自己，己經遭到遺棄，desert 貧困 desertion 遺棄。
第十一句、第十二句對調。
第十一句可以翻譯如下，以發誓之心，寫出自己的不是

 Against that time, if ever that time come,     为防那一刻，如果真来临，

   When I shall see thee frown on my defects,     对我的欠缺，你眉头蹙紧，

When as thy love hath cast his utmost sum,       当以你的爱－其一掷千金，

   Call'd to that audit by advis'd respects;       被唤去过目－将账单厘清；

Against that time when thou shalt strangely pass, 为防那一刻，你行同陌路，

  And scarcely greet me with that sun, thine eye,   明媚的眼神不再打招呼，

When love, converted from the thing it was,   当情爱已然改变了面目，

   Shall reasons find of settled gravity;               将寻找理由－牢靠而严肃；

Against that time do I ensconce me here            为防那一刻，我躲在此处－

   Within the knowledge of mine own desert,         以自身的良知反思舛误，

And this my hand against myself uprear,          举起我的手将自己咒诅，

   To guard the lawful reasons on thy part:          度着法理－从你的角度：

To leave poor me thou hast the strength of laws,  律帮你，撇下潦倒之我，

Since why to love I can allege no cause.           既然爱了，我有什么可说！

为抵抗那一天，要是终有那一天，                      为防那一天，若真有那一天，

   当我看见你对我的缺点蹙［额］，                      当我看见你对我的缺点皱眉，

当你的爱已花完最后一文钱，                             当你的爱因花掉最后一笔钱，

   被周详的顾虑催去清算账［目］；                       被深思熟虑唤去把帐目核对；

为抵抗那一天，当你像生客走过，                      为防那一天，当你形同路人，

   不用那太阳--你眼睛--向我致候，              不用太阳般的眼睛向我问候，

当爱情，已改变了面目，要搜罗                          当你那颗已面目全非的爱心

   种种必须决绝的庄重的理由；                            想要搜罗到冠冕堂皇的借口；

为抵抗那一天我就躲在这［里］，                       我为预防那一天而躲在这［里］，

   在对自己的恰当评价内安身，                            在这儿思量反省自身的短处，

并且高举我这只手当众宣［誓］，                       并宣誓作出不利于我的证［词］，

   为你的种种合法的理由保证：                            替你那些合法理由进行辩护；

抛弃可怜的我，你有法律保障，                           你确有法律依据抛弃可怜的我，

既然为什么爱，我无理由可讲。                           因你为何爱我，我无理可说。

恐怕那日子终于免不了要来临，

   那时候，我见你对我的缺点皱眉，

你的爱已经把最后的账目结清，

   经过了深思熟虑而一去不回； 

那日子要来，那时你陌生地走过［去］，

   不用那太阳－你的眼睛来迎接我，

那时候，爱终于找到了充分的论［据］，

   可以从原来的地位上一下子变过； 

那日子要来，我得先躲在反省里，

   考虑着自己有缺陷，自己不配，

我于是就这样举手，反对我自己，

   站在你那边，辩护你合法的行为： 

法律允许你把我这可怜人抛［去］，

因为我提不出你必须爱我的根［据］。
